Praised for her "effective performances" (The Vancouver Sun) and "rich tone" (Musical Notes Vancouver), Canadian mezzo-soprano Debi Wong, is fast establishing herself as a dynamic and unique performer. Highlights of her career include: the role of the Sorceress in the Britten-Pears production of Dido and Aeneas; the role of Venere in Monteverdi’s Il Ballo Delle Ingrate with the Early Music Guild of Seattle and Bach’s St. John Passion with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In 2011 she co-founded Finland’s award winning ensemble, White Sparrow, with Norwegian lutenist, Solmund Nystabakk. The duo has appeared on the Stockholm Early Music Festival series, as well as the Gotham Early Music Series in New York City, and the BRQ Vantaa Festival in Finland. Ms. Wong holds a master’s of music from Yale University and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Music at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland.
Otto Tolonen, one of Finland’s most successful classical guitarists, has won prizes in almost two-dozen international competitions between 1995-2009. Among these are the first prizes of the Andrés Segovia Competition, Herradura, Spain and the Markneukirchen Instrumental Competition, Germany. Mr. Tolonen’s repertoire ranges from Renaissance music to the most recent contemporary works. Lately, his focus has been on works of the 20th and 21st century. His performances of, among others, the guitar works of Henze have won him international acclaim, making Tolonen a highly sought-after interpreter of the composer’s music. Previously, another passion, French music, had kept Tolonen occupied for many years. As a result, his first solo CD, tiento français, was published in April 2013 and immediately won him wide critical acclaim. Tolonen has given concerts in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, the United States and all over Europe.
Referred to as “the compelling guitarist” (New York Times) and with
performances described as “wellwrought and subtly moving” (New Haven Advocate), lutenist and guitarist Arash Noori has gained a reputation as a versatile musician with a repertoire ranging from early to contemporary music. He has been a top-prize winner at several national and international competitions, including the Great Lakes International Festival and Competition, and Guitare Montréal. Mr. Noori has appeared with Early Music New York, the Yale Baroque Ensemble and Yale Schola Cantorum amongst others. Mr. Noori also performs regularly with the much-acclaimed ensemble, Cantata Profana as a core member of the group.
